Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Modulus, including record retrieval, diagnostic workups, ongoing care, data privacy protection, and more.

General

Is Modulus a healthcare practice

Yes. Modulus operates as a licensed healthcare practice through multiple registered medical entities: Modulus Health Group CA - NPI 1497633143 Modulus Health Group DE - NPI 1942188693 Modulus Health Group KS PA - NPI 1316825060 Modulus Health Group NJ PC - NPI 1053299792 An NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a unique 10-digit number issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to identify licensed healthcare providers. Every hospital, clinic, and physician practice in the United States has one. Consumer health apps do not. Through these entities, we are licensed to provide healthcare services in all 50 states.

How does Modulus work

Modulus combines board-certified physician services with our patented technology to deliver thorough, evidence-based care. Physicians lead every case, and our technology provides the tools to assist in research and analysis. Our physicians retrieve your complete medical history, analyze it at a depth, and provide actionable healthcare including testing, legal diagnoses, prescriptions, referrals, and telehealth care, if requested.

How is Modulus different from my regular doctor

Most doctors can only spare 10 to 15 minutes per visit and may not have access to your complete medical history. Modulus physicians retrieve records from every available provider, run analysis across your entire history, and provide written guidance that you and your care team can act on.

How is Modulus different from AI health apps like ChatGPT™

AI chatbots provide generic responses based on partial information you give them. Consumer AI chatbots also frequently output confident, highly believable false information. Furthermore, they cannot retrieve your complete set of healthcare records (they only retrieve what you push to them), they cannot order tests, prescribe medications, provide ongoing care, or advocate for you with specialists. Modulus is a licensed healthcare provider that does all of this, with every finding validated by a board-certified physician.

Does Modulus replace my doctor

The choice is yours. Modulus can work alongside your current care team to provide thorough diagnosis and treatment plans, coordinate with your specialists, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

I feel great, so why do I need Modulus

Most health conditions are silent until they are not. Heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic dysfunction often produce no symptoms until they have progressed significantly. Modulus can surface patterns you would never notice on your own: a lab value trending in the wrong direction over a decade, an imaging finding that was noted but never followed up, a family history that warrants earlier screening.

Where is Modulus available

Modulus is available in all 50 U.S. states, with global expansion coming soon.

Do you have physical locations

Modulus currently provides care through telemedicine. Physical locations are planned. Modulus can work with your existing local care team if you choose.

Where is Modulus based, and what is Modulus

We are headquartered in Scottsdale, AZ. The Modulus group of companies was founded in 1997 with a focus on High Performance Computing and AI. Through our other verticals, Modulus has served over 3,700 corporate, governmental, and non-profit clients around the world, with products reaching millions of end users. Past clients include JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Nasdaq, Microsoft, Shell, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of Chicago, and thousands of others.

Why was Modulus Health Group created

Because traditional healthcare is broken. Physicians do not have the time to be thorough, and one of our founders knows this firsthand. His wife and son each live with multiple ultra-rare medical conditions, requiring lifelong coordination across numerous specialties. The other founder brought a long-standing passion for genomics, bioinformatics, and high-performance computing. Modulus Health Group was founded to close that gap.

What does Modulus mean

In Latin, modulus means a unit of measure, a standard for understanding what is true. In mathematics, it is the absolute value, the real magnitude beneath the complexity. In physics, it describes how a material responds to stress. In modular arithmetic, it finds what remains constant when everything else changes.

Medical Records

How do you retrieve my complete medical history

By law, only licensed healthcare providers can query your records directly from other providers through networks like Carequality and TEFCA. Consumer apps cannot do this. We request records from every provider, lab, and imaging company you have ever used within the past ten (10) years, including paper files and legacy systems from years ago.

What if some of my records are on paper or in old systems

We handle this. Our team uses manual processes to retrieve records from providers still operating on paper and fax, including records from decades ago that may hold the key to your condition. We find records you do not know exist, from providers you have forgotten.

Why can't apps like Apple Health or ChatGPT Health retrieve my full records

Consumer apps can only access records you push to them. They cannot query provider networks directly. Additionally, once you share records with these apps, they own your data and may share it with third parties, such as marketers. Modulus is regulated under very strict state and federal health privacy laws that prevent sharing.

Why are my records so difficult to obtain

Your health history is fragmented across every provider you have ever visited. Different hospitals, different systems, different record management policies. Some records are electronic, but many are still on paper, filed in storage rooms, or locked in legacy systems that do not communicate with one another. Some providers charge fees for releasing your records. Under Carequality and TEFCA, only a licensed healthcare provider can retrieve your complete history on your behalf, and that is only half the work. Manual retrieval is an arduous process that can take days or weeks. Modulus does it for you. No consumer healthcare app can.

Physician Reviews

What is the Modulus Synapse Evidence Graph

Modulus physicians use our patented technology to analyze your complete medical history against peer-reviewed evidence. Every finding is traceable, explainable, and mapped to published research. Our internationally patented technology avoids the black box trap of AI and identifies patterns and connections that fragmented traditional care may miss.

Do physicians review my case

Every patient's health history is reviewed by one or more board-certified Modulus physicians who validate all medical findings to ensure nothing is missed. The human healthcare expert is the step no AI chatbot, algorithm, or biomarker panel can replace.

Who are the providers

All Modulus providers are board-certified MDs and DOs located in the United States. To protect our physicians' privacy and prevent unsolicited contact, we do not publicly list individual provider names. Once you become a member, your assigned physician will introduce themselves directly as part of your care.

Can Modulus prescribe medications

Yes. Modulus physicians can provide legal diagnoses, prescribe non-controlled medications, and create comprehensive treatment plans. We also provide documentation for insurance claims, disability filings, and specialist referrals. Your pharmacy bills separately, and we do not direct you to any specific pharmacy.

Testing & Diagnosis

What testing do you order

We order only the tests clinically indicated to confirm, rule out, or refine a diagnosis, including lab work, imaging, and specialty testing. We do not order indiscriminate biomarker panels or expensive imaging that may lead to unnecessary worry.

Why not use comprehensive biomarker panels

Indiscriminate testing often generates false positives, leads to unnecessary follow-up procedures, and causes significant anxiety without improving outcomes. We test what is clinically indicated based on your history and symptoms, not what sounds impressive on a marketing page. False positives trigger anxiety, invasive follow-ups, and real financial harm. False negatives also deliver false reassurance that can delay critical diagnoses.

How long does the initial diagnostic process take

In some cases, within hours. When additional records or testing are required, results follow as soon as they arrive. With our STAT add-on, processing completes within hours for electronic health records and updates automatically once manual record retrieval is complete. Ongoing care is available immediately after your initial diagnostic workup.

Specialists & Referrals

What happens if I need a specialist

Modulus identifies high-quality specialists aligned for your case; physicians who are accepting new patients, have strong reviews, and no medical infractions. We do the hard work for you. When medically indicated, our physician calls the specialist directly, sends your complete workup ahead, and briefs them so they understand your case before you arrive. When urgency demands it, we push for priority scheduling.

Will specialists accept Modulus referrals

Yes. When a board-certified physician calls ahead with a complete workup and differential diagnosis, specialists pay attention. You are not walking in with a chatbot printout, you are arriving with professional medical documentation and physician advocacy.

Privacy & Security

How is my data protected

Modulus operates as a licensed healthcare provider bound by strict state and federal privacy laws, not as a consumer app that merely adopts HIPAA standards voluntarily. Your records live in the Modulus Vault, a dedicated encrypted U.S.-based data store. We never pool, analyze for marketing, or sell your data.

Is my health data private

Your health data is encrypted and privately hosted within the U.S., securely managed, and HIPAA-regulated. Your data is never used to train AI models, never sold to marketers, never shared with pharmacies, insurance companies, or other third parties, and never accidentally deleted. We are legally required to protect and retain your records under federal law.

Can I delete my account

You may delete your account at any time. By law, Modulus is required to retain your data for ten years after your last encounter with us. This means you may request your full health history at any time, even after you cancel your account.

Do you sell supplements or take pharmacy referral fees

No. We do not sell supplements. We do not take referral fees from pharmacies, hospitals, or doctors. We have no financial incentive to recommend any product or procedure. Modulus has no financial relationship with any pharmacy, supplement brand, pharmaceutical company, diagnostic testing company, insurance provider, or other healthcare or non-healthcare provider. Our only revenue source is membership fees, ensuring our only obligation is to you.

What is the Modulus Vault

Your records live in the Modulus Vault™ which provides end-to-end encryption within HIPAA-regulated containment. The only place your health history is safe from the consumer data marketplace. We populate your Vault™ with your complete healthcare history, and your data stays encrypted in a U.S. data center for a minimum of ten (10) years as required by healthcare law.

Does Modulus accept insurance

Modulus can submit claims on your behalf as an out-of-network provider, but we do not contract with any specific insurance company. Emergency Support

What is emergency support

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, you should promptly dial 911 or dial the appropriate emergency number in your location. Modulus provides 24/7 after-hours support for emergency providers. If you have a life-threatening emergency condition, Modulus will transmit all relevant medical history to the treating provider upon request. This service is included in your $29/mo membership.

Can emergency responders access my records

Yes. We answer calls around the clock from paramedics, emergency room physicians, and care teams, anywhere in the world. They can query your records directly, for example, "Does this patient have preexisting cardiac conditions?" or "Does this patient have an allergy to sulfa drugs?" - for immediate answers.

The Process

How do I get started

Getting started is quick and easy. Simply click the Get Started button above to begin the process.

What happens after I begin

We review your submission, reach out about onboarding, explain the next steps, and make clear when records will be pulled and when a physician will review your case.

What records do you pull

Providers, hospitals, labs, imaging, medications, and older records when available. Some records can be retrieved electronically. Others may require manual outreach and can take longer.

How long does it take

Onboarding begins right away. Electronic records can often begin coming in quickly, within minutes to hours. Additional time may be required to obtain older, non-network, or paper-based records - sometimes more than a week. Physician review happens once enough of the record has been assembled to review the case meaningfully. Sometimes the same day, sometimes longer, depending on the responsiveness of your providers. We will keep you updated as progress occurs.

When does a physician review my case

After enough of your record is assembled to review the full picture. That review is what helps turn fragmented records into something clinically useful.

What do I receive first

A consolidated record, physician-reviewed findings, and recommended next steps.

Is telehealth available

Modulus is a physician-led medical practice. Depending on your case and what is needed, care may include physician review, follow-up guidance, and telehealth interactions when appropriate.

Can I still see my local doctor

Yes. Modulus can work with your existing care team. We can coordinate with providers, share findings when authorized, and place doctor-to-doctor calls to maintain continuity.

Can I submit my own research notes

Yes. Our physicians read your research. If you have findings that you want validated, submit them before your visit. They get factored into an updated analysis, and your provider discusses the findings with you. We do not dismiss patients for doing their own research, we honor it and help sort fact from fiction.

What is ongoing monitoring

Modulus actively listens for new updates to your health across every healthcare network you touch, including new lab results, new provider visits, and new hospital admissions. We notify you when maintenance testing is due and provide ongoing follow-up until you are better.

Alternatives

Can I obtain my records another way

While some healthcare apps advertise record retrieval, by law only a licensed healthcare provider can query your records directly from other providers through federal networks like Carequality and TEFCA. Consumer apps cannot do this - they can only access what you manually push to them. Your other option is to contact each hospital, provider, lab, and imaging center yourself, request your records individually, and piece them together on your own. This process can take weeks or months, and you may not even have a complete list of every provider who holds your data. Modulus handles all of this for you as part of onboarding.

What about biomarker subscription services

Indiscriminate lab panels and full-body MRIs produce false positives and false negatives, both of which are dangerous. Modulus is not incentivized to sell you tests, we test only what is clinically indicated based on your complete history.
